The Downside of Being a Creative Entrepreneur, and What You Can Do About It. - PleaseNotes

What?  There is no such thing? Downsides to being creative? You have magic and inspiration and ideas and adventures bursting out of you!

Until you don’t.

Until you feel like a dry sponge.

Until you feel like several naps are necessary all at the same time.

Until you feel like Googling to see if mercury is in retrograde.

It’s interesting being in a highly creative position and then running out of juice.  You aren’t able to trudge your way through and the majority of things on your daily hit list require you to bippity boppity boop something out of nothing.

So what can you do?

The best thing I’ve learned is to listen.

Why is that block there? Is it trying to tell you something?

Here are a couple options;

  1. It could be that it is time for you to focus on the non-creative aspects of your job, like sales or spreadsheets, and the only way to switch you from one to the other is for your sub-conscious to cut off the creativity.
  2. It could be a great sign for you to be creative, just in a different way.  Have a dance, art, poetry, music, reading, rap battle break. Don’t time it, and don’t put any pressure on yourself. It’s an amazing way for your brain to mix things up. I like writing in my journal or playing with watercolors. Do what works for you.
  3. It’s time to unplug.  Even though being creative is your juice, it is still work and it can be difficult to notice when you are overworking yourself.  It could be as simple as a “mental health day” aka diddle-around day, sitting on a patio, taking a well deserved nap or watching E!’s continual Kardashian marathons (no judgements).

Find what resonates with you and do it.  There’s no shame in your game and definitely no shame in taking a break and a breath.  Remember, you are a human being, not a robot doing.

I’m about to curl up in bed and read, and it’s 3:00 pm on a Monday.
