How To Use Affirmations To Improve Your Life

How To Use Affirmations To Improve Your Life - PleaseNotes

We've all heard of affirmations. They're supposed to be the key to success and happiness, right? Well, they are! However, some people get confused about how to use them correctly. In this post, we will explain how you can use affirmations in your daily life and why they actually work.

What Is An Affirmation?

An affirmation is a positive statement you repeat to yourself with the intention of achieving your goals. For example, for my goal of becoming a better writer I might say “I am on the path towards becoming a great writer” (affirmation) or “I love writing” (self-affirmation).

Deceptively simple in concept though they may seem, there are actually several ways to use affirmations effectively:

  • You can use them as part of self-hypnosis or meditation practice

  • You can write down a few sentences on an index card and carry them around with you everywhere

A simple affirmation can be as effective as any habit if it is done with a sense of intention and an awareness of how the words affect you. Affirmations aren't magic spells; they're just another method of reprogramming your subconscious mind by using positive statements.

Affirmations vs. Positive Self Talk

First, let's talk about what affirmations are not.

Affirmations are NOT positive self-talk. This is a common misconception. Affirmations are not simply telling yourself that you're awesome because you think it will make you feel better—it is much more than that. Positive self-talk involves thinking through what your goals are and how your behavior can support those goals, while affirmations involve taking an action to change the way that you think and feel in order to achieve those same goals. For example:

  • Positive self-talk: "I am going to work on my essay."
  • Affirmation: "I am going inside every day with the intention of finishing my essay." The difference here is subtle but important! What's happening when we use affirmations? We're creating space in our minds for new thoughts and feelings that align with our priorities, which then allows us to do things differently when it comes time for them (that's the goal).

If you're wondering how to use affirmations, it's simple! All you need to do is repeat your affirmation out loud (or in your head) every day. It's okay if they don't make sense right away—that's just part of learning something new.
