Employee Appreciation Gifts in Canada: What Teams Actually Keep, Use, and Talk About
Most employee gifts have a shelf life of about a week. A logoed water bottle goes to the back of the cupboard. A gift card gets spent on groceries and forgotten. Nobody feels seen, and the budget is gone.
Turns out the gifts people keep have something in common. They do a job. They help someone think, write, calm down, or connect with a teammate, and they do it on an ordinary Tuesday.
If you are an HR lead, a People and Culture manager, or the person who got handed "employee appreciation" along with everything else, here is how to choose gifts your team will actually use.
Start With the Feeling You Want to Create
Before you pick a product, pick a feeling. Do you want people to feel calmer? More confident? More connected to each other? A gift that matches the feeling carries your message long after the card is recycled.
That is the idea behind everything we make at PleaseNotes. Stationery for self-trust. Each piece gives an employee a small, repeatable way to build the habit, not just a reminder to be grateful you gave them something.
Five Appreciation Gifts That Get Used
1. The Guided Gratitude Journal
The Guided Gratitude Journal gives people a few minutes a day to notice what is working. It is a calm, low pressure gift for teams under heavy workloads, and it pairs well with a gratitude session. If you want the research angle for your leadership team, our post on the real benefits of gratitude journaling explains why a small daily practice goes further than a one time thank you.
2. The Guided Clarity Journal
The Guided Clarity Journal suits the person who is growing into a bigger role, or the employee you want to keep. It helps them sort out priorities, decisions, and next steps on paper. It is a thoughtful promotion gift and works as a year end thank you for high performers.
3. Affirmation Pens
A set of three Affirmation Pens is the easy add on. Retractable black gel pens, each carrying a different message. They get used at every meeting, so the reminder shows up in every set of notes. They fit inside any gift kit and in any budget.
4. The "Hey You, In Case You Were Wondering" Notepad
The Hey You Notepad is made for peer recognition. Tear off a sheet, leave it on a teammate's desk, and watch the mood in the room shift. It is a great fit for team celebrations because the gift keeps giving, one note at a time. You can read more in our product highlight.
5. The Inner Voice Notebook
The Inner Voice Notebook is a practical, good looking notebook that people carry into meetings. It is a strong choice for events, conferences, and team off sites, and it has been part of our custom summit orders.
What to Know About the CRA's $500 Rule
Canadian employers get a helpful break here. Under the CRA's administrative policy, non-cash gifts and awards worth up to $500 per employee per year are generally not a taxable benefit, and the gift should be tied to a special occasion or an employment related achievement. Cash and near cash gifts, including many gift cards, are taxable.
Gift cards have extra conditions, including that they cannot be converted into cash and that the employer keeps a record of each card. Physical gifts like journals, pens, and notebooks keep the paperwork simple. Rules change and every company's situation is different, so confirm the details with your accountant or payroll provider before you order.
Build a Kit, Not a Pile
One strong gift beats five random ones. A simple kit works well for most appreciation moments:
- One journal, either gratitude or clarity, as the anchor
- A set of Affirmation Pens
- A notepad for recognizing teammates
- A handwritten note from the leader, which costs nothing and matters most
If you are building welcome kits for new hires, our post on 5 unique onboarding gifts that make impact with new hires shows the same approach for the first 90 days.
Make It Yours With Custom
Some teams want the product exactly as it is. Others want their own name, colours, or message on it. PleaseNotes does custom work three ways:
- Branded: our products with your logo and message
- White labeled: our products under your brand
- 100% brand new: a product designed from scratch for your team
See what we have made for other teams in our custom work deck.
Our custom work ranges from conference swag to full welcome kits. If you are planning an appreciation program, send us a corporate or bulk inquiry or book a call and we will help you choose.
If your plans include learning as well as gifts, our leadership development workshops pair naturally with any of the products above.
